A new airline, Silk Avia, is being established in Uzbekistan

11 January 2024

A new airline, Silk Avia, is being established in Uzbekistan at the initiative of the Ministry of Transport of Uzbekistan, Uzbekistan Airports JSC is establishing a regional subsidiary, Silk Avia. The new air carrier plans to launch flights as early as next year. Silk Avia was registered in September this year, and in the framework of the Dubai Airshow-2021, held from 14 to 18 November in Dubai,

Uzbekistan Airports and HAS Aviation GT LLC signed an agreement on development of a strategy for a regional airline. Establishment of a regional airline is important to stimulate business activities in Uzbekistan and create conditions for the development of domestic tourism, which in turn will affect the increase of aviation mobility ratio, showing the average number of flights per resident of the country. "We have set a goal to create an airline in the market that will provide domestic air travel for Uzbeks at affordable prices. Until recently, the lack of direct flights connecting the cities of Uzbekistan was a big problem. To get from Samarkand to Khorezm, passengers had to fly through Tashkent. Our task is to organise domestic flight routes not only according to the point to hub principle (from the capital to the regions), but also according to the point to point model (between the regions). The new company plans to launch 40 flights and purchase up to 70-seat regional aircrafts. The tariffs will be comparable to those of the railway service. This will have a beneficial effect on the domestic tourism, and on the final cost of air tickets for the consumer" Rano Djurayeva,

Chairman of the Board of Uzbekistan Airports noted. The new airline is also necessary for the development of local airports, so at the first stage it is created by the management company Uzbekistan Airports. In the future, the carrier is planned to be privatized. Importantly, Silk Avia does not position itself as a competitor to the national air carrier Uzbekistan Airways, but acts as a partner in organizing domestic transportation.
